In-network providers

University of California Health providers

UC Health providers are in-network for all UC PPO plans. When you choose UC Health, you choose top-ranked, innovative and state-of-the-art care across the UC Health system. Physicians and researchers collaborate across the six academic health centers to bring systemwide expertise, from primary care services to treating the most challenging and complex cases. Although uncommon, providers can leave a network without informing patients. To avoid surprises, confirm with your provider before each appointment that they participate in the Blue Shield of California PPO network.

Blue Shield of California providers

You can find in-network doctors and other care in your area by name, specialty, and most common type of visit using Accolade’s Find Care provider search tool on Accolade member portal, mobile app or by calling Accolade at (866) 406-1182.

You can also find a provider using the Blue Shield of California provider search tool:

To find a UC Care Tier 1 or Tier 2 provider:

  1. Enter your location (city and state where you want care).
  2. Enter a doctor's name, specialty or condition.
  3. View providers. Use filters to narrow results by Tier 1 or Tier 2 and whether providers are accepting new patients. Badges next to each name show tier and availability. Note that Tier 1 providers are available only in California.

Although uncommon, providers can leave a network without informing patients. To avoid surprises, confirm with your provider before each appointment that they participate in the Blue Shield of California PPO network.

Coverage when you're traveling

Find care outside California

You or family members traveling or living outside California can access care across the U.S. through the BlueCard Program, which offers access to 92% of U.S. doctors and 97% of U.S. hospitals. You are not required to use a BlueCard provider; however, you’ll pay less when you do, because services received from BlueCard providers are reimbursed at the in-network level of coverage for your medical plan.

There is no charge for in-network preventive care. For other services, you must first meet your medical plan’s deductible. Then the plan pays the same percentage of the cost for covered services as if you received care in California.

If you seek out-of-network care, you may need to submit a claim, and you’ll pay a higher deductible and a greater share of the costs.

To find a BlueCard provider, call Accolade at (866) 406-1182. Some specialists — as well as certain treatments and procedures — may require a referral or prior authorization before your first visit.

See the benefit booklet [PDF] for complete information about covered services.

Find care outside the United States

All of the PPO plans include worldwide coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core.

Non-emergencies: For routine or non‑urgent medical needs while abroad, visit bcbsglobalcore.com or download the BCBS Global® Core app. Enter "UCD" as the 3-digit prefix of your member ID number. You can search for contracted providers and hospitals in your destination country.

Tip: Using an in‑network Global Core provider increases the chance that Blue Shield can issue a Guarantee of Payment, reducing or eliminating upfront costs.

Emergencies: Go straight to the nearest hospital. As soon as you're able, have the provider, a traveling companion or yourself contact the Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core Service Center at +1 (804) 673-1177 (24/7; collect calls accepted) to help coordinate your care and arrange Guarantee of Payment, so you are responsible for paying only for your deductible, copay or coinsurance. If a Guarantee of Payment cannot be arranged, you may need to pay the full cost at the time of service.

Paying for care

Providers outside the U.S. may require upfront payment.

  • Call the Global Core Service Center as soon as possible if you know you will need treatment. They will attempt to arrange Guarantee of Payment with the provider, which means you would only need to pay your deductible or coinsurance at the time of service.
  • Always ask for an itemized bill and a detailed list of the services received and charges for each.

Vaccine options

Retail pharmacy: Visit any Navitus network pharmacy. Many Walgreens and CVS MinuteClinics also stock or can order travel vaccines. Find a pharmacy on the Navitus portal.
